Day 3 Assessment Frameworks/Planning

Today the class reviewed some of the elements involved in Assistive Technology evaluation Frameworks. These included MPTTT, WATI, and SETT. We were given time to do research on HAAT which is another extensive framework. The presentation on the above highlighted the main considerations that are important for matching students with the appropriate AT. The small group that I am part of repeated the communication activity from yesterday, using assistive Technology device. This made communicating with our nonverbal friend easier and illustrated the importance of planning well for assigning AT devices and making recommendations. There are so many things to consider and the frameworks are great at organizing information about the student, their environment and the technology. They point the way to helping the student achieve their goals, learn skills and complete their desired tasks. We spent time learning about the ipod touch and the software proloquo2go and how it can be used as an assistive tool. Its simplicity, ease of use and programming seems to make it a multifaceted intuitive AT device. The activities of the day left me with a feel for the importance of proper planning as a key to helping students meet their goals and accomplish tasks through appropriate tools.

  1. I went away with the same feeling, Carl! Proper planning is definitely key and having the right technology to "match" the student and their needs. This needs to be considered above all else, the type of child and need we are assessing so that we can give the best possible tool for assistance. I will be using this framework when assessing needs for all students!
